Your textbook is probably the best place to look for topics because you are sure to find a relevant one. You can check several places in your textbook for topic ideas. You can look through the table of contents. It is a good place because it lists the general topics that you can use to conduct your research until you are able to narrow it down to a good research topic idea. You can also look through the index to get some ideas. It is not as effective of a method but it still works.

3. Newspaper

A newspaper may be a good place to look for research paper topics in most classes. Skim through the current events that are related to your course and see if this helps you come up with a topic. For example, if you read about the death of an inmate and you are writing a paper for your criminal justice class, it may spark the idea of writing a research paper on ways to prevent inmate violence.

4. Magazine

Most major subjects have several magazines focused on that subject. For example, you can look in a science magazine to get help with ideas for your science research paper. Check out a business magazine when you are looking for ideas for your accounting or finance class.

There are many places that you can look to come up with a solid idea for your research paper. Just make sure that your topic is relevant to your course and that it is specific enough that you don’t have to read through too much information. You need to have a fairly specific topic because if you just choose a general topic like accounting, you will have way too much information to present.
